Custom Domain: Should You Buy a New One or Connect Your Own?

Published October 15, 2026

Your website's address matters. Here is how to decide between connecting a domain you already own, registering a new one, or transferring one in.

A custom domain — yourbusiness.com instead of yourbusiness.some-platform.com — makes a business look established, is easier to say and remember, and keeps your address if you ever change platforms. The choice is how to get it onto your website: connect one you already own, buy a new one, or transfer one in.

If you already own a domain, connect it

Many businesses already have a domain, perhaps bought years ago for email. Connecting it to a new website normally means pointing its DNS at the platform and letting the platform issue a security certificate. It costs nothing extra on the platform side, and you keep your registration where it is. This is usually the simplest choice if you already have a name people know.

If you don't, register one

Registering a new domain starts with availability. Pick a short name people can spell, avoid hyphens and numbers if you can, and choose an extension your customers will recognize. A good flow shows you the price before you commit, takes payment, and only then registers the domain — so you are never charged for a name that someone else took a minute earlier.

Transfers take longer

Moving a domain you own from one registrar to another needs an authorization code from the current registrar, and the other side has to release the domain, which can take days. Transfer only if you want the domain managed in the same place as your website, and unlock it with your current registrar first.

What to check before you decide

Posflect supports all three routes from a website or store's settings: connect a domain you own for free, register a new one, or transfer one in. For a new registration or a transfer, the price is shown first and the domain is registered only after your payment is confirmed; DNS is then set and the domain linked to your site, with SSL issued automatically.
